Solar power-assisted Solekshaw from city firm promises to cut down puller’s effort
The postal workers may soon be riding a solar-enabled electric bike. Postal Solekshaw, a solar power-assisted, pedal-operated cycle rickshaw — developed by the city-based Kinetic Engineering Ltd ¿ promises to reduce the rickshaw puller’s efforts by providing battery assistance.
Developed in association with the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur, the project was proposed as part of India800 Foundation, which is aimed at addressing the social challenges of the 800 million poor in the country. “It is a year-old project that was announced on August 15 last year. We have been working on its development for the past four-five months,” said Sulajja Firodia Motwani, managing director, Kinetic.
With rickshaw pullers from the northeastern state as the prime target, the Solekshaw, derived from solar-enabled rickshaw, was conceptualised by the CSIR. “While there can be different uses of the vehicle, the pilot batch expected in a couple of months is meant for postal delivery. The batteries can be charged by solar power at charging stations located at various post offices.”
